Move and Copy

Purpose

Move shifts the selected elements by a vector that you give with two points or as dX/dY. Copy does the same, but leaves the originals in place and may place several times — for two, three copies in a row. Both take along dimensions, hatches and welds of the selection (what travels along).

For copies into another window or another drawing, with rotation or mirroring when placing, use the clipboard; regular copies are created by the array.

Access

  • Ribbon: group Modify, triangle on the button Mirror — Move (3), Copy (4).
  • Classic toolbar: drop-down triangle of the family Mirror (2).
  • Keys: Ctrl + M Move.
  • Command search : Move, Copy.
  • Without a selection, post-selection begins.

Move

Move Select elements, start the tool, then:

  1. Click the base point (1) — with snap, e.g. a corner. The floating field dX/dY appears, the status line reports Click the target point — or enter dX/dY + Enter.
  2. Click the target point (2) — the preview follows the pointer; or type dX and dY and accept with Enter.

The status line confirms Moved by (dx, dy). A target point equal to the base point is rejected (No displacement — click again). After moving, the tool is finished.

Copy

Copy Same procedure, but the base point stays and every further click places a copy:

  1. Click the base point (1) — Click the target point — multiple times possible · ESC = end.
  2. Click the target point (2) — the first copy is created, the status line counts: 3 copied (1x) · another target point or ESC.
  3. Click further target points (3) or type dX/dY and accept with Enter; Esc finishes.

Each copy is a separate step for Undo. The suffix of the message names what was copied along: , 1 hatch(es), , 2 weld(s), constraints.

Options and relations

  • The object snap applies to base and target point; ORTHO and TRACK help with axis-parallel moves.
  • Fixed elements (constraint Fixed) are not moved.
  • Free dimensions (without reference to an element) travel along when selected; both tools also accept a selection consisting only of dimensions.
  • Small moves without a base point are done with the gizmo: drag a grip or enter ΔX/ΔY in the gizmo window.
  • Copying via the clipboard (Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V) allows rotating, mirroring and scaling when placing and also works between browser windows.
